Institute of Climate Change Wins Community Award at AiViet Innovation Award 2025

Recently, the research team of the Institute of Climate Change participated in the final round of the AiViet Innovation Award 2025 and won the Community Award for their outstanding project on sustainable agriculture.

The AiViet Innovation Award, organized by AiViet Venture—a leading incubator for scientific and technological innovation in Vietnam—aims to identify and support projects with high commercialization potential, delivering positive impacts to both Vietnamese and global communities. Additionally, the competition serves as a platform to foster connections and promote the domestic innovation ecosystem.

After more than four months since its launch, the competition attracted over 100 projects nationwide, spanning two key areas: Investment & Business and Science, Technology & Innovation.

Following the preliminary round and jury interviews, seven potential projects were selected for the Final Round. Among them, the project from the Institute of Climate Change, An Giang University, was honored to participate. Titled "Research and Commercialization of Rice Varieties Adapted to the Flood Season and Climate Change in the Upper Mekong Delta," the project is led by MSc. Le Thanh Phong, Deputy Director of the Institute of Climate Change.

The project focuses on enhancing floating rice varieties—an iconic crop of the flood season—through a natural farming model that aids water storage, improves environmental conditions, and strengthens resilience to rising sea levels. The ongoing research holds significant potential for developing unique products suited to flooded regions by refining traditional floating rice into higher-quality varieties, such as fragrant and soft-textured rice, catering to consumer demand. Additionally, the project offers practical solutions to help the Mekong Delta address freshwater storage challenges, establish sustainable rice-aquaculture systems, and promote climate-resilient green agriculture. Recognizing its impact, the AiViet Innovation Award Organizing Committee encouraged the project’s participation in the competition.

According to the Jury, the project offers practical solutions for one of Vietnam's key rice-producing regions, demonstrating high commercialization potential by addressing the growing demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly rice. Beyond local implementation, this farming model can be scaled to other rice-growing areas affected by climate change, contributing to food security and the advancement of sustainable agriculture both nationally and globally.

With the Community Award, the project “Research and Commercialization of Rice Varieties Specific to the Flood Season, Adapting to Climate Change in the Upper Mekong Delta” received a prize of 50 million VND and an incubation investment of 50,000 USD from the AiViet Venture Fund.

MSc. Le Thanh Phong, Head of the research team, stated that in the coming time, the project implementation team will continue to enhance rice varieties and cultivation processes, aiming to develop sustainable, environmentally friendly, and high-value rice products for both domestic and international markets. Additionally, the team will collaborate with businesses, development organizations, and communities in flood-affected areas to replicate the floating rice monoculture model, contributing to improving livelihoods, ensuring food security, protecting the environment, and adapting to climate change.
